Art has always been valuable, even in 1771. Even though a lot has changed in the art world since then, a fine painting is still highly valued. When the Vrouw Maria sank not far off the coast of Finland, it was carrying a hull containing paintings and other works of art that needed to be ferried.

It’s amazing that nobody has ever peered into the cargo hold of the ship, even though it was discovered in 1999. Thus, we still don’t know anything about the state of the artwork that has been there for hundreds of years. It could as well be mulch, or it might be immaculate.
