5. The SS Georgiana

Discovered in 1965
It is uncommon to learn about a ship’s captain deliberately sinking it. It is the very last option for escaping capture. Regretfully, there was no other choice for the crew of the SS Georgiana. In 1863, the ship was intentionally destroyed to prevent a situation like this from occurring on her first trip.

It was rediscovered in 1965 by E. Lee Spence, who also uncovered a lot of interesting goods, including a lot of medication and other supplies like munition, lying around in the once-active ship. Unbelievably, these salvaged trinkets were valued at more than $12 million.
