The aureus, a common gold coin, was used in the Roman Empire together with denari, or silver, and asses, or bronze. Hoards of these coins have been discovered over the ages by explorers, excavation firms, and fortunate individuals equipped with metal detectors. Such a find is the Lincolnshire Treasure, for instance.

10,000 Roman coins were discovered in a cache by a metal detectorist. In Cambridgeshire, the coins were nestled into two ceramic vessels, one nestled inside the other. Depending on the coins’ condition, the trove, which is one of the biggest coin hoards ever discovered, might be worth up to $500,000.
