15. The Mary Rose

Value Estimate Present: Unknown
Year Vanished: 1535 Year Found: 1971
In 1511, the Tudor Navy’s commander, King Henry VIII, launched the Mary Rose. This carrack warship was extensively reconstructed in the 1530s; on July 19, 1535, nine years after her repair, she saw her last action. After making a devastating attack on a French invasion fleet, the Mary Rose was sunk.

Though she would subsequently sink in the Isle of Wight’s Solent, she did considerable damage. The wreck was discovered in 1971, and the Mary Rose Trust raised it eleven years later. Weapons, nautical supplies, sailing gear, and other crew-used items were among the discoveries. The Mary Rose Museum in England has these astonishingly well-preserved antiques on display.
