The vast underwater artwork known as Coralarium gives the impression that the seafloor is something entirely different. This $50 million building was designed and built by artist Jason de Caires Taylor on a secluded lagoon with blue waters in the Maldives.

Strange hybrid coral structures and sculptures of a wide variety of people could be seen in the seas of the Indian Ocean. The purpose of the Coralarium is to provide sea life with an opportunity to explore a new habitat by imitating the adjacent coral reef. Sadly, the Maldives government ordered the Coralarium to be destroyed in 2018—just a few months after Taylor started his project—because it was thought to pose a threat to “the peace and interests” of the Maldives.
