Rediscovered in 1981, the year of discovery
One of the richest cruise ships in history, the RMS Republic, is thought to have carried more than $1 billion in cargo when all of it was discovered, accounting for inflation. Republic collided with another ship, causing her to sink. Fortunately, the Republic had a brand-new Marconi telegraph.
1,500 lives were spared when the RMS Republic (@rafaelarmada20) and Pinterest Republic crew sent out a CDQ distress call. The flagship of Boston’s White Star Line, she was dubbed the “Millionaires Ship” due to the large number of wealthy Americans who took trips on her. The Republic is notable because she was the first person to successfully rescue a marine via radio, bringing Marconi’s brilliant innovation to a global audience.
