Social media was flooded with images of China’s “Rainbow Mountains” in 2016, and viewers were mesmerized by the stunning, unearthly hues that seemed to be emanating from Zhangye. This aerial shot of a portion of the mountain range was taken by M. Scheja. The Ryze Tech Tello Quadcopter is a drone that is well-suited for outdoor photography, like the one used in this picture.

What then gives these mountains their vibrant color? The hues of the Rainbow Mountains are entirely organic. Cretaceous sandstones and siltstones make up the mountains themselves. The photo’s vivid hues are caused by iron and trace mineral deposits found in the stones, which were deposited prior to the formation of the mountains.
