6. The AVE High-Speed Rail System
Where: Madrid, Spain
* Total Expensed: $1.69 billion
Year Completed: 1992
The Spanish state-owned Alta Velocidad Española (AVE) High-Speed Rail Network began passenger service in 1992 and has been progressively growing ever since. In each of the four years before 2020, the AVE High-Speed Rail Network—which can reach up to 192 mph—assisted over twenty million travelers in reaching their destinations annually. Because of the travel limitations, the numbers for 2020 are anticipated to be significantly fewer than usual.

Ten additional high-speed rail lines are presently being built, making the network in Spain the largest in Europe and the second largest globally, after China. Several of these routes should be operational within the next three years.
