The Baghdad Battery is believed to have been discovered in 1936 in Khujut Rabu, Iraq, close to Ctesiphon, the former capital of the Sasanian and Parthia Empires. Three artefacts that were found together—a copper tube, an iron rod, and a ceramic pot—were together dubbed the Baghdad Battery.

Wilhelm Konig of the National Museum of Iraq believed the device might have functioned as a battery, but other scientists disagreed. Some others thought it might have been an old vase used to preserve holy manuscripts. The 2,000-year-old Baghdad Battery’s actual function is still a mystery.
