The Han Emperor gave the Japanese envoy the seal, which was cast in China. It’s unclear how the seal got into an irrigation canal centuries later. Huge, blocky stones that needed to be lifted by two individuals covered the seal. The Kuroda Clan, the local lords, found it and promptly retained it until they agreed to give it to the city of Fukuoka two centuries later.
