All of these ground-level wooden structures were constructed in the middle of the 1800s, and in 1889, a woodworker’s accident at the stove caused a fire that destroyed them all. Over 25 blocks were burned, and $8 million worth of damage was caused by the Great Seattle Fire. The streets were raised twenty-two feet during the restoration, burying but not forgetting the old city.
