On November 21, 1915, she sank in the Weddell Sea of Antarctica after becoming stuck in pack ice. While Shackleton and a few courageous others sought assistance, the crew managed to live by traveling to Elephant Island in lifeboats. Endurance was discovered 9,869 feet below the surface in March 2022, and she is currently a protected historic landmark.
