For archaeologists, the discovery of a single underwater ancient artifact can be quite exciting, but finding a whole underground cave system full of various artifacts can be even more so. Divers in Mexico were pleasantly delighted to find the largest underwater tunnel system in the world—it belonged to the Mayans.


The Travel/MMayan Pyramids and Ruins
After over 10 months of investigation, the Gran Acuifero Maya group discovered a network of over 200 underwater caverns that were fully connected to form this complex chain. These caves offer archaeologists a great opportunity to learn about ancient artifacts that date back roughly two millennia, including human bones and pottery.
