This treasure ship is thought to be one of many that belonged to Zhang Xianzhong, the Chinese peasant leader who spearheaded the insurrection against the Ming Dynasty, according to archaeologists. Zhang’s ship is reported to have sunk near the Minjiang River after he was ambushed by soldiers while carrying his priceless cargo south.

Silver continued to wash up on the coast at this spot in the latter half of the 20th century, prompting the establishment of an archaeological investigation. The dig turned up almost 20,000 priceless artifacts, including swords, jewelry, and gold and silver pieces.
