8. Piano Tuner Discovers Gold Sovereign Coins Inside Piano
Location: England’s Shrewsbury
Year Found: 2017
Value Estimate: $4000-$600,000*
Bishops Castle Community College sent an antique piano to be serviced by a tuner. When the tuner disassembled it, he found what was subsequently referred to as the biggest British gold coin hoard ever found. The previous owner of the gold had stashed the coins inside the piano and never came back to get them.

The discovery was deemed “treasure” by the Shrewsbury Coroner’s Court, allowing the college and tuner to divide the profits. The 913 gold sovereigns, which were dated between 1847 and 1915, were valued between $400,000 and $600,000. Despite the fact that fifty people came forward to claim the treasure as their own, John Ellery, the county coroner, disregarded all of them and declared the identity of the genuine owner to be “unknown.”
