In 2021, the Chinese spacecraft Zhurong touched down on Utopia Planitia, a plain in Mars’ northern hemisphere. It touched down where NASA’s Viking 2 lander touched down back in 1976. Zhurong is currently orbiting Mars with the goal of discovering ancient life.

Zhurong returned data that thrilled astronomers and proponents of extraterrestrial life. Data from the probe revealed that water filled the Utopia Planitia Basin, proving that Mars was not as arid and frigid as previously believed.
