The All Sky Automated Survey for Supernova recorded an event in 2015 that had never been observed before or afterward. Initially believed to be a supernova, the Assn-15lh tidal disruption event revealed a flare of light brighter than 20 Milky Ways.

Astronomer Giorgos Leloudoas and his colleagues from Israel’s Weizmann Institute released their results a year after the incident. A spinning black hole had drawn a fading star into its unavoidable abyss, just as a vortex would swallow a ship at sea, causing what everyone thought to be an explosion.
