The NATO reporting designation for the 9K33 Osa is “SA-8 Gecko.” The Gecko is a surface-to-air missile system with a short range, high mobility, and low altitude. The Gecko was created by the Soviet Union in the 1960s and put into service in the early 1970s. It’s known as Romb to exporters.

The first of its kind was the gecko. A unique air defense missile system that mounted engagement radars on a single vehicle was involved. With a weight of 17.5 tons, the Gecko needs five soldiers to operate. Nearly all of the cars were made at the Znamya Truda Plant. 1,200 were produced up until 1988, when the Soviet Union was about to collapse.
