Since the 1980s, police and military personnel in South Africa have been using the Casspir multipurpose recoilless prosthesis (MRAP). Troops are transported on four-wheel-drive vehicles called MRAPs. Twelve more soldiers and their gear, as well as two crew members, can fit inside the MRAP.

When it was originally manufactured, the Casspir was incredibly rare, and it assisted the U.S. Marines in creating specifications for their new, modern Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles. The steel body of the Casspir was raised high above the ground, providing occupant protection in the case of a detonation. This made the vehicle unique in the field of mine defense.
