Over time, archaeologists have found ship remains beneath San Francisco’s downtown rather than in the water. At the height of the Gold Rush, these ships were berthed in Yerba Buena Cove until they were abandoned. So far, about forty ships have been discovered; estimates suggest that another thirty-five may lie hidden beneath San Francisco. The bay filled in as the city expanded over the ages, and the ships were merely filled in with it.
