Through a network of highways, tunnels, and bridges, the new highway system was created to reroute traffic away from the city’s most crowded sections. The Turnpike Authority found thousands of leaks in 2001 as a result of subcontractors’ neglect to remove gravel and other debris before laying concrete.
Late in the summer of 2004, a significant leak occurred in the Interstate 93 north tunnel, necessitating its closure for repairs. After twenty-six years of construction, several incidents, and $24.3 billion in costs, the nightmare known as “The Big Dig” was finally over.
