Weeds are a gardener’s worst nightmare. It appears that the second you turn around, a weed emerges from the earth. Newspapers can make weed control much easier. Weeds cannot grow beneath newspaper mulch, hence they are prevented from doing so.

To use, rip slits in sheets of newspaper to allow mulch to fit around your plants. Fit the plant into the slit in the newspaper, then cover it with hay. The hay will give additional weed control while also weighting down the newspaper and keeping it from floating away.
