5. A wine bottle’s indent at the bottom

Have you ever noticed the odd small depression at the bottom of a bottle of wine? This actually goes back to the time when glass was blown by hand to make wine bottles. Glassblowers had to decide whether to make the bottom curve inward or outward because they were unable to make it flat.

It would be impossible for the bottles to stand upright if they had been selected outward. The imprint is no longer necessary because bottles are now manufactured by machines rather than by hand. However, wine producers decided to keep the bottom in place for centuries.
