If your home is an older, nineteenth-century home, you may have discovered when you moved in that the doorknobs were brass. The selection of brass was made for a number of reasons unrelated to the metal’s inherent beauty.

Doorknobs were traditionally made by brazing two pieces of metal together. Doorknob manufacturers began using casting in the 1840s. Manufacturers employing these techniques in the nineteenth century found brass to be appealing since it was strong and could withstand corrosion much more easily than other metals. Subsequent investigations would reveal that brass and copper alloys, among others, also offer increased resistance to the growth of bacteria.
