In 1600, King Henry IV of France decided to truly push the envelope when he wished to send a gift to his future bride before their wedding. One day, when Marie de’Medici opened her door, she was greeted with a glistening feast full of roast meats and seafood.

But it was sugar that had been intricately carved to resemble fish and meat instead of actual food. Henry wasn’t even present when they finally tied the knot. Rather, he sent a life-size sugar replica of himself on a horse to accept the vows on his behalf.
