Although it lacks the primary armament, the AVRE shares almost the entire tank chassis of the Challenger 2. Its hydraulic excavator arm, which can clear barriers, excavate regions, detonate mines on contact, and deposit fascine, takes the place of a turret. The construction of each unit costs about $6.7 million. So far, thirty-three have been constructed.
