Surprisingly perishable, elastic bands are used in everything from office supplies to exercise equipment. They become brittle and shatter easily as they age, usually losing their stretchiness after a year or two. Things like heat, light, and frequent use hasten this deterioration.

Thus, those bands you have stashed in a drawer may not be as trustworthy as you believe. They are necessary for keeping everything neatly packed, but it’s time for a replacement when they begin to break or lose their elasticity.
