Home to more than six million skeletons, the Paris Catacombs (shown above) enthrall with their gruesome past but also with their surprises. This illegal residence included a bar with alcohol, a terrace, an amphitheater, and a makeshift restaurant complete with a couscous pressure cooker. Operating on a multi-line phone system and a professionally fitted electrical system, this hidden refuge demonstrated an incredible and daring use of the catacombs that combined the unexpected with the spooky.
