At low tide, Scotland’s Sculptor’s Cave, tucked away in the sandstone sea cliffs of Moray, opens up to reveal its mysteries. This cave, used from 1000 BC to the 4th century AD, has recently been mapped in a 3D model and is one of the few places in Scotland where remains of the prehistoric dead have been discovered. By using “excarnation” burial, polished bones signifying post-mortem care were left exposed, exposing bodies to the elements.

The 1500-year history of the cave, which includes the horrible executions and beheadings in the third century, is suggested by pictish carvings and a cooking space for guests. This miracle of archaeology offers insight into prehistoric burial customs in Scotland.
