After 2014, the Israel Defense Forces realized they needed a new kind of tank because their heavily armored vehicles were not particularly good at navigating the congested city streets. The Carmel Tank was born as a result. This urban combat tank currently has three prototypes under development.

Despite having a gunturret above that resembles a tank, the Carmel will be much narrower than a typical tank. On the Carmel, new technologies include next-generation cooperative active protection, hybrid engines, IED alert and neutralization systems, and modular transparent armor. Additionally, the Carmel allows a two-man crew to drive with the hatch closed and still have a full view of the field (or city street).
