The U.S. Army was to employ the Boeing Vertol-built BV XCH-62, also known as the Model 301, which was a heavy-lift helicopter. The military vehicle was sanctioned in the 1970s, and only one prototype was made. In 2005, the concept was formally sent to the trash heap.

The XCH-62 was designed to support the Chinook, which was outclassed by the Soviet Union heavy-lift helicopters in terms of payload capacity. Soviet helicopters could lift 44,000 pounds; the Chinook could only carry 28,000 pounds. Despite multiple attempts to complete the project, the XCH-62 was ultimately determined to be excessively costly. Congress refused to fund it in 1989 because one helicopter would have required $71 million, and things have gotten worse since then.
