It’s possible that Surcouf ran into an American freighter, which would have perished in the collision as well. Her demise was unexpected because she was the largest cruiser submarine the French Naval Forces had at the time. Although no one has dove to verify the wreckage to date, if its sinking location is accurate, it is 9,800 feet below the sea’s surface.
