The Second World War saw the construction of thousands of these tanks, most of which are now housed in museums. The English Civil War general Oliver Cromwell was the inspiration behind the name of the Cromwell A27 cruiser tank. The Cromwell was the first tank that England deployed that had both respectable armor and a dependable Rolls-Royce engine.

The Cromwell could only be equipped with a medium-velocity gun at the time, although the Comet eventually resolved that issue. In the summer of 1944, the Cromwell saw service for the first time in the renowned Battle of Normandy.
