8. Soryu Class Submarine – Japan
Manufacturer: Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is the main user.
Each unit costs $6.1 million.
Attack vessels powered by diesel and electricity, the Soryu-class submarines, are in the service of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The first of the classes, whose design was an improved Oyashio class, went into service in 2009. Because of Soryu’s X-shaped stern, which combines rudders and diving planes, you can tell the two classes apart.

Because it was Japan’s first air-independent propulsion submarine, the Soryu-class is notable. The Stirling engines, which are made by Kawasaki, allow the submarines to submerge for extended periods of time. One of the class’s submarines, Oryu, was the first in the world to use lithium-ion batteries.
