The Red Banner 9, or HQ-9, is a long-range surface-to-air missile that uses radar homing technology. It is comparable to the S-300 and Patriot systems, which are deployed by Russia and the United States, respectively. The HQ-9 has an operational range of more than 186 miles and is equipped with an HT-233 PESA radar system.

The most recent in a lengthy series of missiles from China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corporation is the HQ-9B, one of the latter versions. The missile’s two-stage solid propellant rocket engine allows it to reach a maximum speed of Mach 4.2. Although the HQ-9B may use a variety of radars, expenditures have been kept to a minimum. Each HQ-9B costs roughly $2 million.
