The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge was constructed between 2000 and 2002. Because of its unique silhouette, it has become a landmark in Brasilia. Brasilia is primarily supported by the bridge, which bears the name of former Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek. The bridge was designed by Mario Vila Verde and Alexandre Chan.

The bridge is 3,900 feet long and features a pedestrian promenade in addition to six automobile lanes. The bridge’s steel and concrete arches are as recognizable in Brazil as McDonald’s golden arches are in the United States. Connecting Brasilia with the Brasilia International Airport, which is located on the eastern bank of Paranoa, is a bridge that spans Lake Paranoa.
Award-wise, the Juscelino is well adorned. In 2003, during the International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh, Alexandre Chan was awarded the Gustav Lindenthal Medal. The Juscelino earned the ABCEM Award that same year, and the Conference recognized the bridge for its “aesthetic merit,” “community participation,” and “harmony” with the “environment.”
