Omar Ammann, the same man who developed the Lincoln Tunnel, created the bridge. Although the lowest level wouldn’t be constructed until the 1960s, the George Washington Bridge’s construction started in 1927 and ended in 1931. This bridge is probably well-known to you from classic films like the Warner Bros. crime classic Goodfellas.
The George Washington Bridge had the title of having the longest main bridge span in the world for many years following its construction. The main span of the GWB was 3,500 feet long; the bridge’s total length is 4,760 feet. But when the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, it lost that distinction. The mid-span clearance of the George Washington Bridge is 212 feet.
