Unbelievably, Detroit used to be a sophisticated metropolis that people desired to visit or call home. Built in 1925 in an ornate, baroque French Renaissance style, the Michigan Theatre stands as a tribute to its magnificence. Building the Michigan Theatre came at a cost of $42.4 million, adjusted for inflation.

Cornelius W. and George L. Rapp, two well-known architects, created the design. Before it changed hands, the theater had forty years of glory, and the new owners showed little interest in maintaining a theater. The Michigan Theatre was closed and deserted in 1957 following a double feature of A Thousand Clowns and The Spy With a Cold Nose.
