4. Belgium’s Power Plant IM
Location: Belgium’s Charleroi
1921 is the year
Price: $500 million to $1 billion*
This abandoned power station, which can be seen in a Charleroi, Belgium area, resembles something from a science fiction film. When Power Plant IM was completed in 1921, it was among the biggest coal-burning facilities in the nation. The town relied on it as its primary energy source as it could chill 480,000 gallons of water each minute.

However, Power Plant IM’s reputation collapsed in 2006 after Greenpeace obtained data claiming that it was accountable for 10% of Belgium’s CO2 emissions. Following the unfavorable attention-grabbing protests, IM shuttered its doors in 2007. Despite being “scheduled for demolition” for years with little progress, it is nevertheless a highly sought-after destination for urbex travelers.
