Houtouwan is an abandoned fishing town in China, east of Shanghai. It is located as part of a series of 400 islets on the northern side of Shengshan Island in China. Today, Houtouwan is overgrown and covered with vegetation, serving as a metaphor for what might happen if people suddenly vanished.

Two thousand fisherman once called Houtouwan home, but in the early 1990s, issues with food distribution and education caused the fishermen to leave the village. The town was inhabited by a small group of people up until 2002, but today it is a popular destination for those who want to discover new places and capture unearthly images.
