When Birnbeck Pier was being built in the 1860s, it was a big thing. A public holiday was proclaimed in Weston-super-Mare, and the foundation stone was placed by the mayor’s toddler son. They even had a big, festive meal in the town hall. Before permanently closing in 1994, Birnbeck was operational for almost a century. Despite a few ownership changes, attempts to renovate it have not yet been successful.
