15. Widow Jane Mine, Rosendale, New York
Location: New York’s Rosendale
Although the Widow Jane Mine has officially been abandoned for more than fifty years, it has welcomed a sizable number of tourists over its tenure. Year: 1825; Cost: $5–$10 suggested donation to see. This cement mine was at the forefront of the industry and was situated in Rosendale, New York. The discovery of massive amounts of dolomite limestone there in 1825 marked the beginning of its history.

Even though Widow Jane didn’t stop operating until 1970, its story wasn’t finished. Apart from being a well-liked location for riding and hiking, the Widow Jane has also been used as a recording studio, concert space, trout nursery, and—perhaps most intriguingly—a mushroom farm.
