Located outside of Boston, Massachusetts, Brook Farm continues to be the most well-known utopian society to have existed in the United States. The farm was established in 1841 by transcendentalists Sophia and George Ripley, who aimed to create a commune where work and responsibilities were shared equally, and a balance between work and leisure that would serve the greater good was the ultimate goal.

Unfortunately, Brook Farm’s ideology made it difficult for the famous company to make money, and as a result, it had to close its doors in 1847. During its existence, the commune hosted visits from notable American intellectuals such as Margaret Fuller, Charles Anderson Dana, Horace Greeley, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Blithedale Romance by Hawthorne is set in a town that was inspired by Brook Farm.
