The Glasgow Botanic Gardens were established by the Caledonian Railway Company as a part of the now-defunct Glasgow Central Railway. This establishment was a cross between a railroad station and a greenhouse; the rail platforms and track ran beneath the gardens. Locals in Glasgow dubbed it “The Kremlin” because of its unusual onion-domed structure.

Despite the vegetation, the station and line were never very well-liked since they were filthy, soot-stained, and smoke-filled—far worse than street trams. Due to minimal customer traffic, the station closed formally in 1939. Thirty years later, the line closed since it was no longer considered profitable.
