5. The Island of Ross

Place: India’s Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Period: 1857
Expense: $2 million
Located off the coast of India, Ross Island was one of around 500 islands. During the Indian Rebellion, British colonists used it as a prison. On their portion of Ross Island, the British constructed tennis courts, chapels, and opulent bungalows while the Indian captives were housed in run-down jail cells.

When a powerful earthquake struck the island in 1941, nearly everyone who lived there perished. During World War II, the Japanese occupied Ross Island and converted the structures into bunkers. The island was abandoned by the Japanese after World War II, and although it is accessible to the public, roots, vines, and other flora have since taken over.
