Place: Nevada
Period: 1905
Expense: $3.7 million
Rhyolite is a ghost town that located a short distance from Death Valley in Nevada’s Bullfrog Hills. In 1905, the town was established. It was one of the few mining communities that arose in the Bullfrog Hills following the discovery of gold. Following the influx of thousands of gold seekers, entrepreneur Charles M. Schwab transformed the town into a residential neighborhood by installing utilities such as piped water, railroads, and electricity.

Rhyolite was a passing fad that vanished almost as fast as it appeared. People were fleeing in large numbers due to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the 1907 Financial Panic, and the depletion of gold ore reserves. There were no persons remained by 1920.
