3. Air and Sea Forts Maunsell

Place: United Kingdom
Period: 1942–1943
Expense: $15,500
In the Thames and Mersey estuaries, the Maunsell Forts were deserted. In WWII, they were built as armed towers. These towers guarded the United Kingdom as army and naval forts. Guy Maunsell, the man who designed the forts, gave rise to the Maunsell name. In the 1950s, the Maunsell Forts were formally shut down.

With the exception of a few endeavors like transmitting pirate radio, they have been left in peace ever since. The Maunsell Forts are accessible by boat for exploration, and Project Red Sands is working to save the Maunsell Fort in the Red Sands. Only a few are (formally) accessible to the general public.
