13. Elfland

Place: Boston, Massachusetts’s Somerville
Period: 2021
Expense: Incalculable
Elfland is charmingly quirky, having begun as an eight-year-old’s effort. The lot was cleared and walled in after a gas station close to the child’s home was abandoned. The vacant lot was transformed into a small elf settlement when the youngster and his family started adding small models with elf themes.

When outsiders started submitting their own models, Elfland really took off and became its own unique little metropolis. The area’s developers face a difficult task because they are unable to remove this Boston monument; instead, they must figure out how to relocate it without causing any damage. After all, who wants their business to be associated with destroying public art installations?
