In essence, abandoned tunnels are underground haunted houses, and it’s difficult to find an abandoned tunnel creepier than the one in the Sierra Nevada Mountains’ Donner Pass. The Donner Pass tunnels were built for transcontinental train travel in the middle of the 1800s. It took fifteen months of arduous effort, primarily by Chinese labourers, to complete them.

These tunnels were treacherous from the start, and many workers died during construction, which gave rise to ghost stories. The Donner Party, a notorious group of California explorers who became stuck in the mountains and forced to eat one another to survive, is another reason why the Donner Pass Tunnels have a spooky past.
