After that, the boat was owned by different people until a catastrophic fire occurred in the 1990s.

The Spirit had been hiring out dinner rides up the river at the time, but the fire destroyed it. It was fixed and sold, but it never reached its previous splendor. The city was forced to spend over $1.6 million cleaning up the wreckage after vandalism caused it to partially sink. This was necessary to prevent the Spirit from becoming a problem again because if it broke loose and entered the river, it would destroy anything in its path.
